What are discrete semiconductors?
Discrete semiconductors are basically the opposite of integrated circuits. It is a single circuit that serves only as a single semiconductor, rather than the multiple semiconductor components you might find on a printed circuit board (PCB).
They are usually designed for high power or high frequency functions and therefore require specialized packaging.
What are some examples of discrete semiconductor devices?
Here are some individual device examples:
Thyristor: This type of semiconductor is often used as a switch that runs a specific amount of current through them
Bipolar Transistor: Carrying Both Positive and Negative Charges in Analog Circuits
Zener Diodes: These discrete devices are the most common type of voltage regulation component
Bridge Rectifiers: Named because they are built from a specific configuration of diodes
TRIAC: Bidirectional switch, allowing bidirectional current
MOSFET Transistors: Metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors are widely used for switching and amplifying signals
JFET Transistor: Junction Field Effect Transistor is voltage controlled and therefore provides resistance
DIAC: commonly used to trigger thyristors
Rectifiers and Schottky diodes: capable of fast switching with low voltage drop

What can discrete semiconductors be used for?
Since they are the most fundamental part of engineering, they have a wide range of uses in both industrial and consumer applications:
Trigger: DIAC can be used to trigger TRIAC
Space saving: one Darlington transistor takes up less space than two transistors
Application switching: JFET transistors are often used in this way
Power Controllers: Thyristors are often used for this purpose
Analog and digital: MOSFET transistors can be used in two ways
